Job Summary

The New Orleans District provides for navigation, flood and hurricane risk reduction, environmental stewardship, and other water resources needs to benefit the people of southern Louisiana and the nation. The offices are located in modern energy efficient buildings in the uptown area of New Orleans overlooking the Mississippi River. There is a childcare center and a fitness center on the premises, and free employee parking. Audubon Park is within walking distance.

Major Duties

  • You will be directly responsible for all stream gauging and water qualify activities in an assigned geographical area.
  • You will either work independently or under the supervision of higher grade personnel while in remote locations.
  • You will take discharge readings and water quality samples while installing, inspecting, reading and maintaining a variety of gagues and automated recording devices.

US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience:

GS 05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Experience operating, maintaining and servicing hydrologic measuring instruments.

OR

Education as a substitute for experience can be used at the GS 05 level if you have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of engineering, construction, or industrial technology; or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as engineering, engineering or industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, biology or mathematics. GS 06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Experience taking water measurements and collecting samples from a variety of water stage and flow instrumentation AND, 2) Experience operating, maintaining and servicing a variety of hydrologic measuring instruments. GS 07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Experience taking water measurements and collecting water samples from a variety of water stage and flow instrumentation AND, 2) Experience operating, maintaining, and servicing a variety of hydrologic measuring instruments AND, 3) Experience utilizing standard testing methods to obtain water quality data from designated locations. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone at the GS 06 and GS 07 level--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Pay Range

$34,916.00 - $56,222.00
