Job Summary

This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position is to perform as a technical assistant in the performance of a variety of hydrology tasks, either as a crew member or individual worker.

Major Duties

Performs a variety of technician work in support of hydrologists, civil engineers, and other professionals engaged in scientific studies of surface water, meteorology, sediment and debris production, and water quality for water resource planning and design. Applies considerable initiative and seasoned judgment, mathematical knowledge, and the study of hydrology analysis and consideration of techniques and procedures, to perform the following duties:

  • Installs and maintains the district hydrologic instrumentation; repairs, calibrates, and services gages and recorders; performs all maintenance necessary to insure optimal operation of all equipment.
  • Performs all planning necessary for modification of existing data collection stations or installation of new stations to augment or improve existing instrumentation. Makes sketches of locations, dimensions, layouts, and modifications; coordinates with design personnel and applicable agencies.
  • Prepares precipitation, sedimentation, and watershed operation reports for transmittals to higher authority and other agencies; may supervise activities of lower-grades technicians in this effort.
  • Prepares correspondence relating to the request for or transmittal of hydrologic data, or any other matters relating to the district's instrumentation programs. Contacts and confers with Federal, State, and local agencies to exchange data and coordinate stream gaging and rainfall data collection.
  • Compiles and analyzes hydrologic data for use in studies or reports, and furnishes data to district elements and outside agencies. Develops area-capacity, curves and compiles capacity tablet from surveys for use in reservoir operation and sedimentation studies. Plots and revises discharge rating curves from discharge measurements.
  • Provides guidance to dam operators and lower-graded technicians in routine maintenance and reading of hydrographic instruments.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements. GS-08: (1) One year of specialized experience at the GS-7 level. Specialized experience is defined as one or more of the following: Prepares reports, diagrams, charts, and graphs in support of technical work in hydrology; installs, inspects, services, maintains, and operates hydrological instruments, devices, and equipment in the field, laboratory, or office, etc. For the GS-08 there is no substitution of education for this position.
