Major Duties

This position is located in the Northwest Oregon District, Bureau of Land Management in Eugene, Oregon.

The incumbent will provide hydrology, riparian management, and soils input into the project planning process across the Northwest Oregon District and its Field Office. The responsibilities for the position include, but are not limited performing water quality monitoring for time harvest, seed orchard management, road construction, and stream restoration. Additionally, the incumbent will be expected to inventory and monitor the use of water rights, roads and drainage structures.

Physical Demands: Field work requires considerable amount of walking, lifting, bending, climbing steep slopes and through dense brush, and stream wading is necessary to collect data. The incumbent is required to carry moderate sized backpacks of equipment to and from work site.

Work Environment: Work is performed in both field and office settings. The incumbent is subjected to those hazards and discomforts associated with field work in forested areas, which includes varying temperature from extreme cold to extreme heat, rain, and/or snow conditions. Poison oak and stinging insects are found throughout the work area. Field work involves moderate risks and may require protective clothing. Other work time is spent in an adequately heated, lighted and ventilated office.

Qualifications

Basic requirements: Degree: physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels or combination of education and experience -- course work as in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Specialized Experience: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement - please be sure to include this information in your resume. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-) of the position to be filled. GS-05: To be considered qualified for this grade, must possess specialized experience at the GS-04 grade level. Examples of specialized experience gathering data concerning the quantity, quality, availability, movement and distribution of surface and ground water, measure surface water discharge and ground water levels and then processing the data.

GS-06:To be considered qualified for this grade, must possess specialized experience at the GS-05 grade level. Examples of specialized experience carrying out data collection and analyses to include recognizing unusual or unexpected results, compute and process data used to track and forecast river stages, calculate sediment loads.

GS-07:To be considered qualified at this grade, must possess specialized experience at the GS-06 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include conducting research to determine existing level of information on water rights, preparing field work by gathering maps and equipment and determining water rights, developing climatological and hydrologic data for current or proposed engineering projects and calculate water surface profiles.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Pay Range

$36,139.00 - $58,196.00
