What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Salary for Lakewood, CO:$58,006 (Step 01) to $75,408 (Step 10); Salary for Middleton, WI:$52,905 (Step 01) to $68,777 (Step 10); Salary for Reston, VA: $59,534 (Step 01) to $77,396 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01.**Duty station will be determined after selection is made**

Major Duties

As a Hydrologist within the Water Mission Area's Integrated Information Dissemination Division - Data Science Branch, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Modeling temperature dynamics and changes in optical habitat (through dynamic water clarity) for thousands of lakes.
  • Aggregating diverse datasets to parameterize and validate models.
  • Collaborating on the development of methods for combining process-based and machine learning models to improve water predictions.
  • Building automated reproducible data workflows for modeling, analysis, and data visualization, often leveraging high-performance/throughput computing.
  • Delivering results using compelling data visualizations and data releases.
  • Working with state agency and university partners.

Physical Demands: The work requires frequent physical exertion while conducting field portions of project work and with inspection of ongoing operations, including walking over rough, rocky, uneven terrain; lifting and carrying equipment and supplies; and wading in streams in all types of weather.

Work Environment: The work involves some degree of risk when conducting on-the-ground assessments of operations as well as exposure to moderate discomfort from such extremes as heat, cold, and inclement weather.

For information on basic qualifications, which includes information on whether you may substitute education for specialized experience, please click on the following: Hydrologist Series.In addition to the basic education requirement listed in the link above, if you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must meet the following:

One year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience include performing a variety of observations, computations, compilations and analyses in assisting higher level Hydrologists in carrying out hydrologic assignments. This work experience would have been involved in following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures, and would have required a good general working knowledge of the principles and the theories of hydrology.

Pay Range

$52,905.00 - $77,396.00
