Job Summary

You will serve as a Physical Scientist in the Ocean Projects Department of NAVOCEANO BAY ST LOUIS. GS-07: $43,251 - $56,222 PER ANNUM GS-09: $52,905 - $68,777 PER ANNUM

Major Duties

  • Prepares configuration management documentation for collection systems prior to survey.
  • Develops new Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques to create efficiency and improve oceanographic product quality.
  • Performs oceanographic data collection during oceanographic survey.
  • Performs system administration functions for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Systems (AUV) data processing vans.
  • Prepares data collection vans for at sea operations.

Specialized Experience for GS-09: In order to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: - Prepares data collection vans for at sea operations.

- Applies side-can sonar, water depth measurements, seafloor topography and microtopography data, underwater optics and navigation systems and data.

- Performs configuration management function for Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Systems (AUV) collection vans.

- Prepares configuration management documentation for collection systems prior to survey.

- Produces products applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques. Specialized Experience for GS-07: In order to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: - Assists in processing, editing and reviewing oceanographic and/or geophysical data.

- Compiles and integrates the oceanographic and/or geophysical data from various sources to a final product.

- Assists in the collection, processing, reviewing and evaluation of the data while participating as a member of a survey team.

- Applies oceanographic, marine sciences and marine data collection methods.

- Assists in system analysis, hardware/software development for collection and processing systems. Basic Requirements for Physical Scientist (1301): A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirements for Oceanographer (1360): A. Degree: major study of at least 24 semester hours in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology, or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, computer science, and engineering sciences. OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR GS-07: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: One year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement in an accredited college or university that is directly related to the work of the position. SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR GS-09: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position: Two years of graduate-level education in an accredited college or university that is directly related to the work of the position.
