Job Summary

Army Public Health Center mission is to promote and prevent disease, injury and disability of Soldiers, military retirees, their Families and Department of the Army Civilian Employees; and assure effective execution of full spectrum veterinary services for Army and Department of Defense Veterinary missions. You will serve under the general direction of the Client Services Division Chief, as a Chemist/Physical Scientist with United States Army Public Health Center (USAPHC).

Major Duties

  • You will be responsible for the coordination of analytical chemistry projects and Public Health Programs.
  • Assisting with the coordination of laboratory sample analysis projects involving explosives, toxic gases, and other highly complex chemical materials.
  • You will use knowledge of environmental and industrial hygiene analytical chemistry principals to advise clients on the best sampling and analysis approach.
  • You will be responsible for recommending revisions to sampling and analytical policies and technical guides.
  • You will represent the organization, as a technical expert, at meetings and conferences.
  • You will recommend and/or coordinate the development and modification of sampling and analysis procedures for trace levels of pollutants of environmental and industrial hygiene health.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Chemist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirement for Physical Scientist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to one of the majors, as shown in A above, that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: GS-11 One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Coordinating laboratory sample analysis of environmental and/or industrial hygiene projects with customers; (2) Assisting in providing consultative services on environmental and/or industrial hygiene sampling and analysis matters; (3) Assisting with developing and updating policies and technical guides relating to environmental and/or industrial hygiene laboratory support and (4) Evaluating technical data and quality control information to assess data usability. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: such as chemistry or physics. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. Specialized Experience: GS-12 One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Coordinating laboratory sample analysis of environmental and/or industrial hygiene projects with customers; (2) Providing consultative services on environmental and/or industrial hygiene sampling and analysis matters including health hazard evaluations; (3) Developing and updating policies and technical guides relating to environmental and/or industrial hygiene laboratory support and (4) Evaluating technical data and quality control information to assess data usability. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job at this grade, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
