Job Summary

Serves as part of a technical team responsible for matters pertaining to ecological aspects of environmental analysis for complex water resource projects in the planning, design and operation of disposal of dredged sediment including compliance with Clean Water Act related requirements. This is a Temporary appointment or Temporary Promotion opportunity of one (1) years that can be extended up to three (3) years, or made permanent without further competition.

Major Duties

  • Conducts environmental analysis studies related to the District's civil works planning, design, construction, and operations and maintenance (O&M) programs.
  • Utilizes applicable federal guidance and scientific knowledge to identify contaminants of concern (COCs) in sediments and water, and assesses their preliminary ecological risk.
  • Assist in identifying/targeting testing areas, statistics, health effects, chemical properties, and procedures to be used in performing risk assessments.
  • Assists in the environmental coordination of O M and other dredging activities, and securing of the associated permits (primarily Clean Water Act Section 404[b][1] Evaluations and Section 401 Water Quality Certifications [WQCs)
  • Prepares written comments or documents for response or review, action, and correction
  • Provides technical assistance and consultation regarding ecological concerns to other District personnel.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Biologist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Requirement for Ecologist:

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience interpreting and implementing environmental and cultural resource laws, executive orders, regulations, and policies, including the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA); planning, coordinating, and scheduling water resources studies with emphasis on flood damage reduction, navigation, and environmental/ecosystem restoration; providing technical guidance to interdisciplinary teams to avoid and minimize impacts to environmental and cultural resources; preparing work schedules and study information to ensure identified objectives are met; and coordinating public involvement and stakeholder engagement and contributing to open communication with the public. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Pay Range

$64,009.00 - $83,210.00
