Job Summary

This position is with the Chugach National Forest, Planning and Resources Staff in Anchorage, Alaska. The incumbent is responsible for supporting managers and resource specialists in the use of geospatial technology for land, natural resources, and ecosystem management. Major Duties

  • Assists with the maintenance of the Forest?s spatial and tabular databases and associated national applications.
  • Work with resource specialists to update databases, ensure regional and national data standards are met, ensure data accuracy, resolve errors and update metadata.
  • Manipulates and analyzes geospatial data to support management decisions, planning, and monitoring activities.
  • Compiles data to create maps for resource programs, planning documents, management alternatives and other projects.
  • Provides informal geographic information specialist (GIS) training and technical support to resource specialists and local GIS users.
  • Responds to Regional and National information requests and provides GIS support for Forest Planning.

Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.-OR-

Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. GS-0401:

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR- Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. GS-1301:

Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.-OR- Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Examples include: Applied data principals to the development of maps or other technical or visual materials and the manipulation of geospatial data; Created simple thematic map products and presentation materials using established automated map and chart making processes; and/or Applied basic geographic and cartographic principles to the resolution of simple issues in geospatial database construction and map compilation; OR - One full year of graduate level education (18 semester hours) in a geographic information systems related field of study; OR - A combination of successfully complete graduate level education and specialized experience that together meets the requirements for this position; OR - Superior Academic Achievement (to determine if you are eligible, go to: http://www.opm.gov/qualifications/policy/ApplicationOfStds-04.asp).The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. For the GS-09: One year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 in the Federal service. Examples include: Participated in developing data dictionaries, data models, and metadata for multi-disciplinary information and geospatial applications; Participated in the manipulation and analysis of geospatial data linking a variety of resources such as socio-economics, land, air, water, timber, recreation, wildlife, fisheries and/or special management areas; Created increasingly more complex thematic map products and presentation materials using established automated map and chart making processes; and/or Applied basic geographic and cartographic principles to the resolution of more complicated issues in geospatial database construction, map compilation and LiDAR processing; OR - A master's or equivalent graduate degree, 2 years of progressively higher level graduate or LL.B. or J.D., if related, in a geographic information systems related field of study; OR - A combination of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate level education in a geographic information systems related field of study (courses in excess of 18 semester hours) that together meets this requirement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Pay Range

$48,368.00 - $76,915.00
