Major Duties
This position serves as the Lead Mining Engineer for the Price Field Office, Green River District. As Lead Engineer, the incumbent provides technical and regulatory expertise to advance mineral exploration, mine development, mine operations, and eventually the Reclamation of these projects located on BLM and Forest Service public lands. Major duties include but are not limited to:
- Serves as the point of contact for all mine-related activities including: inspections, meetings, planning, product verification, report writing, and coordination of all inter and intra-agency meetings and calls.
- Communicates the organization’s strategic plan, mission, vision, and values to the team.
- Serves as a technical and regulatory staff advisor to the Field Manager and Deputy State Director (DSD) and is responsible for performing advanced professional engineering services for the field office, the district, and the state.
- Ensures on-the-ground compliance with BLM regulations and project specific mitigation through inspection and enforcement (I & E) measures.
Physical Demands: Although most of the work is in the office, periodic field inspections of exploration and mining projects will be required. Fieldwork requirements may include long periods of driving, riding over rough roads and trails, walking or hiking over mountainous and/or rough terrain, possibly some off-road vehicle riding. Travel in all kinds of weather will be required. Under emergency situations, the Lead Mining Engineer must be prepared to investigate an exploration or mine site regardless of the weather, time of day, or terrain.
Work Environment:Most of the work is performed in an office setting. However, some fieldwork is required in order to conduct inspections of exploration and mining projects. The outdoor environment can range from below freezing temperatures to over 90 degrees F, and from snow or rain to very dry.
Qualifications
Basic Education Requirement: This position has a positive education requirement:
To qualify as Mining Engineer (0880):You must have a degree in professional engineering.The curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with a least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ABET as aprofessional engineering curriculum: OR (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.ORa combination of education and experience -- college level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.Please click here for additional information on the basiceducation requirement for the 0880 series:Individual Occupational Requirements.

In addition to the time-in-grade and basic education requirements, to qualify at the GS-12 level you must meet the following:Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of a Mining Engineer.Specialized includes performing professional mining engineering work in the mineral exploration, mine development, mine operations, and the reclamation of mining projects; served as a senior engineer/staff specialist performing engineering work in the exploration, development & operation of mining engineering work; and communicating technical and non-technical information to a diverse audience. Pay Range
$74,596.00 - $96,978.00
