Job Summary

This position is located on a National Forest. The incumbent leads a crew composed of at least three employees, one of which is at the GS-5 level. The crew carries out a variety of surveying assignments associated with the Forest's engineering and cadastral surveying work.

Major Duties

Independently measures uncomplicated surveys and resolves technical problems. Conducts measurements from known points along unobstructed routes and between benchmarks of known elevation following established or clearly designated routes. Determines angles, distances, and differences in elevation between stations.

Conducts P-line surveys or assists with road design work.

Operates and maintains a variety of manual and electronic devices, e.g., transits, theodolites, levels, alidades, distance measuring and positioning equipment, and other instruments on land surveys.

Recognizes and reports errors, inconsistencies, and other deficiencies in technical data.

Selects the method for presenting data for internal use to include such forms as drawings, models, or tables.

Keep records and prepare reports.

Leads a team of employees performing work up to the GS-05 level. Is responsible for identifying, distributing, and balancing the workload and tasks among employees in accordance with established workflow and skill level. Establishes priorities to ensure timely accomplishment of assigned team tasks. Monitors and reports on the status and progress of work. Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques and provides on the job training to new employees. Answers questions on procedures, policies, and directives and obtains needed information or decisions from supervisor on problems that occur. Checks on work in progress. Approves leave for a few hours or for emergencies. Resolves simple, informal complaints of employees and refers others to the supervisor. Reports to the supervisor on performance, progress, and training needs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

NOTE: The incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.

Qualifications

You must possess the Basic Requirements identified below to be considered eligible for this position. Transcripts must be provided for qualifications based on education. Your application or resume must clearly show that you possess the appropriate experience requirements. GS-06: (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least a GS-05 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as: Technical work which provides knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and terminology of surveying to complete assignments. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector. GS-06 there is no substitution of education for this position. To receive consideration for this position, you must meet all qualification requirements on the closing date of this announcement. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
