Major Duties

At the entry level of this position, you will:

  • Evaluate human health and environmental problems related to air pollution, with a focus on utilizing risk assessment, toxicology, and epidemiology to evaluate chemical risks.
  • Develop and evaluate and/or implement strategies designed to increase public health and/or reduce pollution, through voluntary programs, education, coordination with federal regulatory and enforcement authorities, and other approaches as appropriate.
  • Oversee and coordinate with state air programs, focusing on providing technical support to risk assessment efforts.
  • Serve as a technical contact on grants related to identifying air pollution problems.

When entering a Federal job at a grade lower than the highest potential level, you may be promoted to more complex duties and work more independently as your career progresses.

Qualifications

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

To qualify for the GS-11 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-09 level defined as providing scientific analysis of the health risks of pollution and/or communicating to the public about health risks of pollution- OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in the academic discipline as described below. To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as providing scientific analysis of the health risks of pollution and/or communication to the public about health risk of pollution and implement strategies to help address these problems.

Your application package will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: Knowledge of a wide range of program principles, concepts, practices, methods and techniques and procedures of science, especially epidemiology, toxicology and risk assessment, applicable to one or more program areas and functions under the Clean Air Act.

Knowledge of and the ability to apply this knowledge and to serve as a consultant to solve problems involving diverse aspects of environmental protection.

Skill in developing and maintaining effective relationships to enhance program goals to audiences with opposing points of view.

Skill in analyzing the overall effectiveness of program activities, and recommending changes to future efforts that will improve outcomes. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Pay Range

$70,987.00 - $110,614.00
