Major Duties
- Analyzes climatic regimes, geography, terrain, weather system characteristics, centralized weather products,indigenous surface, upper air reports to forecast weather conditions for takeoff, enroute, and destinations, and air refueling tracks.
- Identifies, evaluates, and monitors significant weather developments, especially as they present potential impacts on critical flight operations.
- Provides technical guidance and instructions to lower graded technical employees. Solves a variety of meteorological problems with other production personnel.
- Provides weather briefings for local, transient, and other supported aircrews in person, by telephone, or by other means.
- Observes, encodes, records, disseminates, and evaluates weather observations.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS: In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-1341-09 Meteorological Technician. For more information, please click here. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: knowledge of meteorological methods, techniques, and practices, including weather observing, forecasting, communications, meteorological equipment and support procedures in determining how local conditions and reports and observations from various sources affect weather forecasts, the extent of change, and whether to take action to protect life and property. OR Education:-Successful completion of two full years of graduate education or a Master's degree in meteorology, mathematics, engineering, or physical science. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-08 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of the principles, procedures, requirements, and work techniques of the full range of advanced operations, instrumentation, and practices in the areas of weather forecasting, observations, weather support procedures, communications, and use of meteorological equipment.
2. Skill in using various computer software and various applications.
3. Ability to measure meteorological phenomena with scientific equipment and instrumentation, and collect, analyze, interpret, adjust, and verify atmospheric or other meteorological data to confirm and improve its accuracy and effectiveness.
4. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to prepare and present briefings, guidance products, and to oversee program activities.
5. Ability to make timely decisions and select a course of action under high stress conditions associated with severe weather and emergency situations.
6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships using tact and diplomacy in interacting with individuals, supervisors, and leadership. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Pay Range
$52,905.00 - $68,777.00
