The primary purpose of this position is to provide meteorological products and services vital to the operational weather and resource protection support efforts to Air Force, Department of Defense (DoD), and/or othergovernment/civilian users.
Major Duties
- Provides complex operational weather support to Air Force, Army, Reserve, Guard, and other DoD/government/civilian users. Provides decision-cycle weather input to shape, plan, and execute AF, Army, Guard, Reserve, and other DoD user operations.
- Identifies, evaluates, and monitors significant weather developments, especially as they present potential impacts on critical flight operations. Discusses the location, intensity, movement, and development potential of weather features.
- Provides technical guidance and instructions to lower graded technical employees, or airmen. Solves a variety of meteorological problems with other production personnel.
- Provides weather briefings for local, transient, and other supported aircrews in person, by telephone, or by other means.
- Observes, encodes, records, disseminates, and evaluates weather observations. Disseminates weather observations using the system and/or other local procedures.
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, to include the Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR) for the GS-0809-09, Meteorological Technician Series. For more information click HERE SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One year of specialized experience that equipped the applicant with a particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to successfully perform the duties of the position, and that is typically related in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, the specialized experience must have been at the GS-08 grade level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal Service. Examples of creditable specialized experience includes: Measuring meteorological phenomena with scientific equipment and instrumentation. Observing and recording atmospheric characteristics, i.e., temperature, air movement, visibility, pressure, air density, cloud types. Decoding, plotting, and systematically recording data related to the physical characteristics of the atmosphere, i.e., charts, diagrams, cross sections. Collecting, analyzing, interpreting, adjusting, and verifying atmospheric and other meteorological data to confirm and improve accuracy and efficacy. OR
EDUCATION: Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree directly related to the duties of the position such as meteorology or physical science. NOTE: You must submit copies of transcripts. OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position. NOTE: You must submit copies of transcripts. FEDERAL TIME-IN-GRADE (TIG) REQUIREMENT FOR GENERAL SCHEDULE (GS) POSITIONS: Merit promotion applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. One year at the GS-09 level is required to meet the time-in-grade requirements for the GS-09 level. TIG applies if you are in a current GS position or held a GS position within the previous 52 weeks. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of the principles, procedures, requirements, and work techniques of the full range of advanced operations, instrumentation, and practices in the areas of weather forecasting, observations, weather support procedures, communications, and use of meteorological equipment.
2. Skill in using various computer software and various applications.
3. Ability to measure meteorological phenomena with scientific equipment and instrumentation, and collect, analyze, interpret, adjust, and verify atmospheric or other meteorological data to confirm and improve its accuracy and effectiveness.
4. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to prepare and present briefings, guidance products, and to oversee program activities.
5. Ability to make timely decisions and select a course of action under high stress conditions associated with severe weather and emergency situations.
6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships using tact and diplomacy in interacting with individuals, supervisors, and leadership. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Pay Range
$56,354.00 - $73,261.00
