Job Summary

This is a TERM appointment. Appointments to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed (NTE) 13 months and may be extendedup to 4 years without further competition. This position is located in the National Weather Service (NWS), Alaska Region, Weather Service Office (WSO) with one vacancy located in McGrath, AK.

Major Duties

Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) for McGrath, Alaska is 4.40% and is not federally taxed. The COLA is not reflected in the locality salary shown in this vacancy announcement. COLAs are exempt from Federal income taxes; post differentials are not.

NOTES:

  • McGrath is a remote location with limited transportation access and amenities.
  • Government housing is a condition of employment.
  • Pets are NOT permitted in government housing.
  • With relocation, no more than one vehicle may be shipped and the shipping costs may not exceed vehicle value.

As a Meteorological Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Collect and measure climatological and meteorological data by use of various instruments and equipment.
  • Record and disseminate the data to the public and other personnel.
  • Provide supplemental situational awareness by relaying observed and reported weather conditions in support of Weather Forecast Office forecast and warning operations.

Qualifications

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify at the GS-07 level:SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicant must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Collecting climatological or meteorological data. OR

Education: One full year of graduate education in a directly related discipline. OR

A combination of education and experience.

Pay Range

$48,368.00 - $62,874.00
