Job Summary

This position is located within a National Forest. The primary purpose of this position serves as a natural resources specialist on a Forest Service unit.

Major Duties

Serves as a natural resources specialist with responsibility for assisting in developing, implementing, and administering a broad-based natural resources program for the unit. The incumbent may be assigned to work in one or a number of program areas, and may assume primary responsibility for a component of a large natural resources program.

Conducts long and short term studies and investigations on the use of soils, water, vegetation, wildlife, and other natural resources as part of the land management and natural resources program. Coordinates surveys, performs monitoring, compiles and analyzes biological data and prepares reports using statistical inference where applicable. Assists in the development, coordination and initiation of all recreational and management aspects of recreational programs to include: preparing regulations, letters of instruction and news releases; collecting population, biological and demographic data; and developing public relations and information/education programs. Balances competing public and private goals for recreational development, commercial development, and natural resource preservation.

Conducts short term studies using conventional fact- finding and evaluation techniques for developing baseline information on birds, fish, and small animals, including their habitat, growth limitations, and feeding requirements. Monitors damage control efforts for compliance with established natural resources program policies and procedures. Recommends new or revised policies and procedures as appropriate.

Analyzes a variety of data associated with environmental studies. Provides input for and uses natural resources data and information generated by the Geographic Information System (GIS) to help develop and present both long and short range planning documents, and to prepare reports on study findings.

Assists in planning, administering, and evaluating various natural resources and environmental protection programs to ensure proper consideration is given to resource conservation and protection measures.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included a major field of study or specific course: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR Combination of education and experience - Applicants who have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree with courses in the major and related fields, a typical college degree would have included courses that involved analysis, writing, critical thinking, research, etc. -AND GS-09: (1) One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level. Specialized experience is defined as: Performed specific portions of multiple resource assignments in support of a natural resource specialist of a higher level that has the overall responsibility. Assisted with activities and requirements with other resource management activities through participation in on-the-ground inspection of recreation activities, timber sales, road construction or other activities which affect resource responsibilities. -OR Successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or masters or equivalent graduate degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR A combination of education and experience listed above.
