This position is located in the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service Office (NESDIS), Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Division (GOES-R) with one vacancy in one of the following locations: Greenbelt, MD; Boulder, CO; Fort Collins, CO; Madison, WI; New York, NY; or Norman, OK.
Major Duties
As a Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:
- Serve as the GOES-R Senior Scientific Advisor and representative of the user community, evaluating user
needs, translating them to requirements, and assuring that users can effectively use GOES-R data. - Serve as a program spokesperson, providing guidance to the program to optimize GOES-R scientific
performance and recommending/overseeing research initiatives. - Evaluate data product maturity.
- Promote educational and outreach efforts.
- Maintain liaison with U.S. and international agencies to ensure that approved programs have the
required capability to sustain NESDIS/GOES-R satellite remote sensing.

Qualification requirements in the vacancy announcements are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook, which contains federal qualification standards. This handbook is available on the Office of Personnel Management's website located at: https://www.opm.gov/policy.Toqualify for the 1301 series:Basic Requirements: Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

Combination of education and experience:education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
To qualify at the ZP-5 or GS-15:In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, applicant must possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-4 or GS-13 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Assisting in the development of algorithms used to derive atmospheric, oceanic and/or land measurements from satellite observations;
Responding to various users regarding the use of geodetic products and services;
Assisting in the development of systems for reprocessing historical satellite data into climate-quality, long-period data sets; and
Maintaining technical and management liaison with the ocean, atmospheric, and geophysical research community for the development and distribution of remote-sensing data and data products.
Pay Range
$123,298.00 - $166,500.00
