Job Summary

The Sciences and Exploration Directorate, Heliophysics Science Division, Space Weather Laboratory at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) is seeking a research scientist to develop and perform fundamental research with physics-based models of the solar wind and its origins at the Sun. The results will be tested and compared with data from NASA missions such as Parker Solar Probe and Solar Dynamics Observatory.

Major Duties

  • You will apply the principles and techniques of astronomy and physics in the investigation and interpretation of the physical properties, evolution, structure, and motion of magnetic fields and particles in interplanetary space.
  • You will conduct special studies for NASA Programs/Projects and its partners, including development of instrument and mission concepts.
  • You will develop solar wind models that include the wind?s origins in the solar corona.
  • As an agency expert in heliophysics research, you will serve as a peer reviewer, mentor, and advisor with other agencies and organizations.
  • You will deliver talks and lectures and present courses on various topics in heliophysics and space weather to project officials, managers, engineers, and other Center personnel.
  • You will conduct studies of resources, natures, and effects of magnetic, gravitational, and electric fields, as well as energetic particles in space environments.
  • You will perform numerical experiments including the evolution of the closed-open magnetic-field boundary on the Sun, the development/propagation of plasmoids and other SW structures, and the associated acceleration/transport of energetic particles.
  • You will develop original theories that can be used to understand NASA and other observations of the structure and dynamics of the solar wind, including slow and fast streams.
  • You will advise the Community Coordinated Modeling Center on implementing and validating the solar-wind models that it hosts.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. GS-13: Specialized experience is defined as developing/modifying 3D finite-volume magnetohydrodynamic codes and applying such codes to major unsolved problems in solar-heliospheric physics; and performing research in the areas of heliophysics and computational techniques.

Pay Range
