Job Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Salary: $74,596 (Step 01) to $96,978 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01. There is one vacancy; however, this announcement maybe used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

Major Duties

As Research Geographer within the Western Geographic Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

-Examines long-term dynamics of landscapes in the western United States and provides land managers with geospatial information, models, and tools to inform future land management in changing environmental conditions.

-Uses remotely sensed imagery to investigate land-use, land-cover, or ecological change processes.

-Disseminates complex research results and participates in other core functions within the research community.

-Collaborates with scientists and experts to submit grant proposals

Physical Demands:

The work is mostly sedentary, requiring some walking, bending, and carrying of light items.

Work Environment:

The work is performed in an office setting. There are no physical hazards attached to the job.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geographer:

Degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

**OR

A combination of education and experience-- courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semesters hours in geography or related fields, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above.

In addition to the basic requirements as stated above, applicants must have one year of specialized research experience comparable to the next lower grade in the Federal Service. Research experience is defined as:Experience which has involved scientific inquiry or investigation and has shown creative and outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research. The work must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle, product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of basic information that opened the way for a major advance in the discipline or field of science. This work may have been achieved by providing a method of solving problems, opening areas of research or providing the means of exploring the application of science in a major area.

Examples of Specialized Experience for GS-12, Research Geographer: One year of professional geography research experience comparable to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service, e.g., conduct research studies related to the field of land change science; authorship of publications of interest and value to the land change science field; implement new research objectives, establish research priorities, modify methods of approach, and execute the study related to land change science. OR

Candidates must have successfully completed all of the requirements for a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree. This graduate study must have provided the knowledge, skill, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. OR Combination of graduate education in an appropriate field of study and appropriate specialized experience as described above.
