Job Summary

What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position? Salary: $88,704 (Step 01) to $115,313(Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired atthe Step 01. There is one vacancy; however, this announcement may be used to fill additional vacancies if they become available.

Major Duties

As a Research Geologist within the Geology, Minerals, Energy & Geophysics Science Center some of your specific duties will include:

- Conducts research in support of projects funded by the USGS Energy and Minerals Mission Ara, specifically in economic geology, statistics, geostatistics, and geographic information systems methods to support mineral-resource, multi-resource assessment and/or integrated natural resources assessment in support of regional planning and development.

- Develops new approaches and applications for assessing mineral deposits and mineral deposit systems through novel application of machine learning, geostatistics, and "big data" analysis.

- Develops methods for assessment of strataform and other mineral deposits.

- Applies advanced geostatistical methods to forecast and portray the amount, distribution, quality, and type of undiscovered mineral resources and to quantitatively document uncertainty of the results.

- Operates a government motor vehicle as an incidental driver.

Qualifications

Research Geologist, GS-1350, BasicEducation Requirements:

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited college or university with a major in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. Combination of education and experience - course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities comparable to those normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field.

To qualify for the GS-13: You must meet the basic educationrequirement plus have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level which is the GS-12. Qualifying specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level could include authoring of one or more papers of considerable interest to others ingeologicalsciences or geostatistics applied to mineral resources studies.Accomplishments demonstrate the ability to independently conductresearchor contribute significantly to aresearchteam. Incumbent is consulted by others on results ofresearchand may make important contributions to geologicalsciences or geostatistics which may result in changes to existing products, processes, techniques or practices.

Pay Range

$88,704.00 - $115,313.00
