Job Summary

This position is located within the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Sustainable Water Management Research Unit, located in Stoneville, Mississippi. The purpose of the position is to evaluate water management practices on the plot, field, and landscape levels utilizing field based measurements and experimentation, and modeling to develop regional conservation strategies and optimize watershed management for long- term agroecosystem sustainability.

Major Duties

  • Develop and assess integrated approaches and technologies for increasing water-use efficiency and water resources sustainability in cropping systems in the Lower Mississippi River Basin while reducing deleterious environmental impacts.
  • Independently plan and conduct research to develop knowledge relevant to this area and actively interacts with other Agency and university scientists, maintains collaboration with federal and state agencies and industry.
  • Participate with other scientists in the ARS long-term Agroecosystem (LTAR) network.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Basic Requirements: Hydrology Series (1315): Degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours in physics. Calculus and physics, as described above, are requirements for all grade levels. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below. At the GS-12:Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in Federal service or possess a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or possess an equivalent combination of graduate level education and experience. Graduate education must be directly related to the work of the position and must have equipped applicants with the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-12 level of this position are: Conducting water related research in the area of hydrology; and publishing research results as a first author on hydrology in peer review journals and presenting research findings at scientific meetings. At the GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for the GS-13 level of this position are: Managing and collaborative research program in water related research in agricultural systems; planning and conducting research in the area of irrigation application and technology, soil water relations and/or plant-water relations; and having a demonstrated record of scientific productivity and peer recognition through publications in peer reviewed journals, invitations, grant funding received, or collaborations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Pay Range

$76,721.00 - $118,603.00
