Job Summary

This position is located in the Sciences & Exploration Directorate, Earth Sciences Division, Global Modeling and Assimilation Office at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). You will serve as a Research Meteorologist performing activities in Earth System modeling and data assimilation to maximize the impact of satellite observations on analyses of the global structure of the planetary boundary layer and its impact on weather and climate prediction.

Major Duties

  • Assimilate observations into global Earth system models to characterize the kinematics, dynamics, physics, and energetics of atmospheric processes.
  • Collect, analyze, evaluate and interpret meteorological data to understand regional variations in the planetary boundary layer and their impacts on global energetics, weather prediction, hydrology, and pollution transport.
  • Analyze and assimilate data from instruments on satellites, aircraft, balloons and ground sites, especially passive and active remote sensing of the Earth's atmosphere and surface.
  • Develop methods to optimize the use of multiple observation types in order to improve the representation of the planetary boundary layer in global data assimilation models, and to evaluate their impact on the prediction of weather and climate.
  • Contribute to the design and development of future space missions by performing Observing System Simulation Experiments that assess the impact of new and improved sensors on analyses and predictions of the planetary boundary layer.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-12), which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above. GS-13: Specialized experience is defined as performing remote sensing studies and data analysis, especially applications of radiative transfer theory to the retrieval of geophysical information from active and passive sensors; performing data analysis and modeling, through advanced data assimilation techniques, and in conducting research and studying atmospheric systems and processes and the role they play in the Earth's energy and hydrological cycles.
