Join the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) in the protection of human and animal health. At CVM, we are responsible for regulating food, food additives, drugs, and devices for millions of pets and food-producing animals. CVM's Office of Surveillance and Compliance (OS&C), Division of Animal Feeds (DAF) is seeking qualified applicants for an Interdisciplinary Scientist Staff Fellow Biologist and Microbiologist position. Major Duties

  • Office of Surveillance and Compliance (OS and C) has primary responsibility for several areas related to public and animal health. The Office monitors the safety and effectiveness of marketed animal drugs after they enter the market.
  • OS and C assures the safety of animal food by reviewing new animal food ingredients, providing oversight of the medicated feeds program, and providing oversight of the feed contaminants program.
  • OS and C coordinates enforcement actions against unapproved animal food and drugs that are on the market and that threaten public and animal health.
  • OS and C regulates the promotion and advertising of animal drugs to ensure that they are promoted in a truthful and non-misleading way.
  • Each year receives more than 100,000 adverse drug events that are used to provide updated safety and effectiveness information to consumers.
  • Division for Animal Feeds (DAF) monitors and establishes standards for feed contaminants, approves safe food additives, evaluates Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) notifications, manages the FDA?s medicated feed and pet food programs.
  • In addition, DAF participates in the review of biotech plant notifications and provides scientific support and guidance on all animal feed matters to FDA and state regulatory officials.
  • As a member of this Division, you will contribute to the mission of monitoring animal food and food ingredients to assure their safety and utility in animal diets.
  • More specifically, you will analyze and interpret scientific data regarding animal food/feed; identify applicable information regarding scientific and regulatory activities and policies that protect human and animal health;
  • Research complex new scientific information that supports the regulatory review of marketed animal food/feed; and serve as a source of guidance on issues related to animal food/feed.
  • The review of food ingredients includes scientific evaluation of data and information on the manufacturing of the substance, intended use and effect, safety for the animal, and safety of human food derived from these animals, as applicable.
  • These evaluations are undertaken for ingredients used in diets for food animals and for pets.
  • This position is located in Rockville, Maryland and will be filled through FDA?s Staff Fellowship program. The appointment is for up to two years with opportunities for renewal. Salary is based on experience and education.

Qualifications

Basic Qualification Requirements for Biologist, 0401:

A degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR A combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Basic Qualification Requirements for Microbiologist, 0403: A degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

OR Combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. , plus appropriate experience or additional education. Desired Education: A doctoral degree from an accredited institution of higher learning, such as a Ph.D. or D.V.M., or other research doctoral-degree widely recognized in U.S. academe as equivalent to a Ph.D. Minimum Qualification Requirements for RG-00 (Equivalent to GS-11):Possess one year of experience, equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal service, experience includes compiling and interpreting documents, reviews, and technical data related to microbiological, biochemical, toxicological, chemical, food science, and/or physiological studies or information reaching scientifically defensible findings; and conducting microbiological, biochemical, toxicological, chemical, food science, and/or physiological studies and assessing the data using sound statistical methodologies OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. If qualifying based on experience, this experience must be reflected in your resume. Volunteer experience can be used as qualifying experience. Minimum Qualification Requirements for RG-00 (Equivalent to GS-12):Possess one year of experience, equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, experience includes analyzing microbiological, biochemical, toxicological, chemical, food science, and/or physiological study data and providing scientifically defensible findings using statistical analyses in written reports; and designing and conducting scientifically sound microbiological, biochemical, toxicological, chemical, food science, and/or physiological studies. This experience must be reflected in your resume. Volunteer experience can be used as qualifying experience. Minimum Qualification Requirements for RG-00 (Equivalent to GS-13):Possess one year of experience, equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service, experience includes analyzing microbiological, biochemical, toxicological, chemical, food science, and/or physiological study data and providing scientifically defensible findings using statistical analyses in written reports; designing, conducting, and assessing the results of complex, scientifically sound microbiological, biochemical, toxicological, chemical, food science, and/or physiological studies; and preparing, presenting, and/or defending scientific findings in writing and orally, providing sound scientific guidance. Pay Range

$72,030.00 - $133,465.00
