Qualifications

Basic Education Requirement

Basic Entry Requirements for Biologist, 0401 Completion of a full four year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline related to this position OR Combination of education and experience that included course work equivalent to a major (i.e. 24 semester hours) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or a discipline related to this position; PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four year course of study with a major as described above. Basic Entry Requirements for Statistics Series, 1530 Completion of a full four year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree that includes 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements should be given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing OR Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. You may qualify at the GS-12 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your experience with natural resource database management, biological sciences, wildlife biology, geography (GIS), information technology, assessing potential environmental impacts of developmental activities on wildlife resources; Publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers; Assisting with the planning, implementing, and reviewing studies of wildlife and their habitats; Assisting with the collecting and evaluating of biological or ecological data; Working on interagency or interdisciplinary teams to plan and implement studies or evaluations to resolve wildlife management problems, and pursuing soft funding to support needed studies or examinations of wildlife issues; Applying knowledge of biometric principles, statistical theories, and wildlife population dynamics in the design, implementation, analysis, and reporting of field investigations and monitoring activities; Experience with hierarchical Bayesian modelling, GIS spatial data analysis and statistics, and spatial analysis using R software; Development of statistically sound study proposals and scientifically valid interpretation of study results; Experience compiling data, relational database structure, and statistical data analysis; and/or Experience in extending existing statistical techniques, or developing new statistical approaches for analyzing complex data sets. You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service that demonstrates your experience in natural resource database management, biological sciences, wildlife biology, geography (GIS), information technology, assessing potential environmental impacts of developmental activities on wildlife resources, publishing peer-reviewed scientific papers, planning, implementing, and reviewing studies of wildlife and their habitats, collecting and evaluating biological or ecological data, working on interagency or interdisciplinary teams to plan and implement studies or evaluations to resolve wildlife management problems, and pursuing soft funding to support needed studies or examinations of wildlife issues; Experience of biometric principles, statistical theories, and wildlife population dynamics, in the design, implementation, analysis, and reporting of field investigations and monitoring activities; Experience with hierarchical Bayesian modelling, GIS spatial data analysis and statistics, and spatial analysis using R software; Development of statistically sound study proposals and scientifically valid interpretation of study results; Experience compiling data, relational database structure, and statistical data analysis; and/or Experience in extending existing statistical techniques, or developing new statistical approaches for analyzing complex data sets.
