Job Summary

As a Supervisory Biologist (Computational Bioinformatics), you will lead the section in Laboratory Information Systems (LIMS), genomics, proteomics, computer programing, database design and computational biology as well as broad knowledge of eukaryotic and prokaryotic biological systems at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories.

Major Duties

  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Resolving technical difficulties, configuring the LIMS system to support new laboratory technologies, and maintaining messaging capabilities to receive and send data to approved systems.
  • Designs and develops program solutions and technical guidance for laboratory personnel on databases/software for next generation sequencing, LIMS, quality assurance databases and new technologies.
  • Recognizes vulnerabilities and inefficiencies in laboratory databases and information management systems and creatively develops plans to solve such issues.
  • Collaborates and consults with diagnosticians, bioinformaticists, IT staff and staff to analyze problems, recommend technology based solutions, and design and develop computational strategies.
  • Works on advanced laboratory processes such as next-generation sequencing and laboratory informatics integration.
  • Ensures that all section personnel working with select agents comply with the provisions of 9 CFR Part 121 Possession, use, and transfer of select agents and toxins.
  • Presents scientific data related to veterinary diagnostics at local, regional, national and international meetings, and publishes material in appropriate scientific peer-reviewed journals.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Selective Factor:

Experience configuring a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), configuring new tests, integrating data between systems and messaging is required. FOR THE GS-13 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-12 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates: Writing scripts to automate the analysis of large amounts of data generated from laboratory instruments as a consultant, developing research or working in a diagnostic laboratory. Analyzing sequencing files >1GB in size utilizing common scripting languages such as Perl, Python, UNIX and R. Note: There is no education substitution for this grade level. TRANSCRIPTS are required This position requires specific coursework or a degree in a specific field to be basically qualified. This education must have been successfully completed and obtained from an accredited school, college, or university Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Pay Range

$88,704.00 - $115,313.00
