Major Duties

As a SUPERVISORY HYDROLOGIST within the CARIBBEAN-FLORIDA WATER SCIENCE CENTER (STUDIES SECTION), some of your specific duties will include:

  • Scientific and technical program development; developing scientific proposals to address water-resource issues, including statement of problem, objectives, approach, budget and staffing; evaluating scientific proposals for appropriate scope, budget, timelines, approach, tasks, and staffing; interacting with other agencies and groups within the USGS to identify water-resource science needs.
  • Effective staffing, staff supervision, and workforce planning, such as; assigning tasks, reviewing work and evaluating performance; mentoring and coaching for success and workforce development; managing conduct.
  • Project and section funds management; guiding project leaders and teams to ensure appropriate scoping and technically sound methods and results; establishing interim milestones and ensuring deadlines and specified deliverables are met, and projects stay within budget.
  • Communications; technical writing and presentations to a wide range of audiences; communicating with other agencies, stakeholder groups, and within the USGS to maintain productive and collaborative relationships; ensuring policies, guidelines, and scientific and technical information are shared within and across staff work groups.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work is primarily sedentary. Occasional fieldwork requires driving, ability to walk through undeveloped areas such as densely vegetated flood plains, over uneven, rough or rocky surfaces, and ability to climb up and down steep slopes such as streams or canal banks.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is primarily in an office setting. Occasional work required is outdoors in urban and undeveloped areas on/or adjacent to inundated areas, in inclement weather, and at night.

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must have one year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience include planning, executing and reporting on original hydrologic studies or ongoing hydrologic studies requiring a fresh approach to resolve new problems. The complexity of this work typically required extensive modification and adaptation of standard procedures, methods, and techniques, and the development of totally new methods and techniques to address novel or obscure problems for which guidelines or precedents were not substantially applicable. At this level, Hydrologists have extensive knowledge of the principles of hydrology and highly developed ability in their application, and wide latitude for the exercise of independent judgment to perform scientific work of marked difficulty and responsibility.

Pay Range

$97,179.00 - $126,336.00
