Job Summary

This position is located in the National Weather Service (NWS), Office of Science and Technology Integration (OSTI), National Weather Service Training Center (NWSTC), with one vacancy inKansas City, MO.

Major Duties

As a Supervisory Physical Scientist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Coordinate with all National Weather Service Regions, National Centers, and HQ Offices, as well as NOAA’s Office of Atmospheric Research (OAR) laboratories and external research community to develop a comprehensive research to operations transition and testing plan.
  • Supervise a technical staff and coordinate efforts of the NWS 135 Scientific Operation Officers (SOOs) and Development Operations Hydrologists (DOHs) into a cost-effective roadmap for advancing science operations through testing and demonstration in the Operations Proving Ground (OPG) environment to meet critical national needs.
  • Coordinate efforts of seven (7) Service Centers in the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and major NWS and OAR meteorological and hydrological developmental laboratories to integrate the NWS cooperative applied research activities, NOAA testbeds at NWS Service Centers and testing/evaluation activities at OPG.
  • Lead the design of testing and evaluation methodologies to furnish a full spectrum of NWS forecast guidance, decision assistance, and forecast preparation tools.
  • Conduct comprehensive evaluation of NWS products, tools, operational concepts, and alternative configurations of operational environment necessary to prepare and provide more accurate and timely forecasts, warnings and decision support services.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:This position requires applicants to meet a Basic Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of specialized experience in order to be found minimally qualified. You MUST meet one of the following basic education requirements:

EDUCATION:

A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience-- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.This experience need not have been in the federal government.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies; knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify for the GS-15 level: SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Testing meteorological and hydrological operational techniques and products; and

Implementing new research capabilities into operational practice.

Pay Range

$128,100.00 - $166,535.00
