Job Summary

WRAIR is participating in an alternative personnel system knows as the Personnel Demonstration Project. The DB-04 pay band is equivalent to the GS-15 Step 01 to GS-15 Step 10. In keeping with the Demonstration pay fixing policies, employees earning a salary that falls within the pay band may not receive an immediate pay increase if appointed to this position. Future pay increases within the pay band will be accomplished through the pay for performance management system.

Major Duties

  • Serve as Neuroscience Research Manager for biomedical research program at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research aimed at developing effective treatments and diagnostics for Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
  • Supervise and mentor research team comprised of PhD scientists and technical staff.
  • Plan and conduct neuroscience research for developing testing, and validating therapeutic strategies to improve outcome from traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Develop and utilize whole animal models for injury and threat exposure.
  • Responsible for compilation and analysis of data to present and publish findings through scientific literature and briefings.
  • Design and direct molecular neurobiology experiments to provide cross-species, identification and validation of blood-based biomarkers to aid in diagnosing brain injury.
  • Provide expert guidance and instruction in small and large animal surgery and physiological monitoring in preclinical models of brain injury and polytrauma.
  • Prepare budget, annual reports, and oversee the allocation and distribution of funds for research program.

Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Supervisory Research Biologist (Brain Trauma): A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Develop and implement large animal research model associated with neurological poly-trauma; (2) Lead and manage comprehensive medical research and development program aimed at content such as treatment and diagnostics of neurological trauma; (3) Prepare and provide reports delivered through scientific literature, briefings, and presentations to medical experts and decision makers. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (DB-03/GS-14).
