Job Summary

This position is located in the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) Protected Resources Division (PRD), with one vacancy in San Diego, CA.

Major Duties

As a Supervisory Research Biologist, you will perform the following duties:

  • Oversee and direct the scientific priorities of protected marine species management, conservation research projects and analysis through to completed science products as the Genetics Program Leader.
  • Provide science leadership and research vision over a comprehensive scientific research program whose mission is to provide the science foundation to enable informed and effective implementation of protected marine species management and conservation, using molecular genetics as it pertains to population structure, distribution and abundance, and health and condition.
  • Publish scientific results to advance knowledge base and inform scientific decisions, participates in briefings/working groups and activities related to Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) and Endangered Species Act (ESA) and present information to a variety of national and international working groups to advance protected species science, assessment, management and recovery activities.
  • Collaborate with Protected Resource Division’s four other science Program Leads, the Division Director and Deputy to develop short and long-term programmatic priorities, including engaging in strategic planning, ensuring effective budget execution and developing funding proposals.
  • Perform full scope of supervisory work by ensuring a safe working environment; giving advice, counsel or instruction to employees on work matters; assigning, reviewing and accepting work; developing and evaluating performance of subordinates; hearing and resolving grievances or serious employee complaints; as well as approving employee premium pay, time cards, training and travel.
  • Conducts protected species field work from shore, small boat and research vessel.

A.

Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

B. Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to the next lower grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This experience need not have been in the federal government.Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.To qualify at theZP-4 or GS-13/14 level: In additionto meeting the Basic Requirements above, applicants must also possess one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the ZP-3 or GS-12in the Federal service. Specialized experience MUST include all of the following: Conducting protected marine species research using molecular genetics;

Publishing peer-reviewed protected marine species manuscripts and/or recovery activity manuscripts;

Providing recommendations on scientific priorities and funding proposals related to protected marine species management and conservation; and

Conducting field work on protected species in the marine environment.

Pay Range

$98,773.00 - $151,739.00
