Job Summary
This position is located on the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest in Baker City, OR. This position is assigned to a zoned Lands Organization, and performs land survey work for multiple National Forest Service units. Major Duties
- Perform land survey work requiring exacting measurements, establishing basic horizontal and vertical controls.
- Measure uncomplicated surveys, resolving technical problems.
- Conduct simple traverse surveys using manual instruments including a total station and electronic distance measuring device (EDM).
- Operate instruments and equipment to locate land and property corners and boundary lines.
- Maintain instruments and equipment used on land surveys.
- Use conventional survey instruments or GPS equipment to collect land survey data.

Basic Requirement: GS-0817: Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 or equivalent and above): Specialized experience is technical work which provided the knowledge and skills needed for work in the type of surveying involved. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include, but are not limited to, work as an engineering technician, soil conservation technician, or construction inspector. OR GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution (a) with major study in an appropriate field of surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics. In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below. Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-05: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as some of the following: Technical work which provides knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and terminology of surveying to complete assignments. It must have required the use of the pertinent instruments and techniques of surveying. OR A combination of education and experience listed above. For the GS-06: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as some of the following: Conducted simple traverse surveys using manual instruments; used transit, theodolites, electronic distance measuring systems, (and/or other instruments) in the establishment of rights-of-way and land lines; recorded data and made sketches of topography and other physical features. OR One full year of graduate education from an accredited or pre-accredited institution meets the requirements for GS-6 when it is directly related to the work of the position. Examples are: surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. For the GS-07: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as some of the following: Operated and maintained a variety of manual and electronic devices such as transits, theodolites, levels, alidades, distance measuring and positioning equipment, or other instruments used on land surveys; compiled topographic maps, survey plats, and related information using appropriate equipment and techniques to obtain and depict all details and information pertinent to the intended purpose; independently measured uncomplicated surveys and resolved technical problems. OR One full year of graduate education from an accredited or pre-accredited institution meets the requirements for GS-7 when it is directly related to the work of the position. Examples are: surveying, engineering, construction, or industrial technology. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Pay Range
$34,916.00 - $43,251.00
