Job Summary

This is an Surveying Technician (Hydrographic), position for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Galveston District E&C Northern Area Office, Hydrographic survey Section located in Galveston, TX RELOCATION/RECRUITMENT INCENTIVE MAY BE OFFERED TO SELECTEE

Major Duties

  • Field expert on hardware and software systems with respect to Multibeam, Side Scan Sonar, and Single/Dual Frequency hydrographic survey systems.
  • Conduct bathymetric data collection and processing necessary for the production of maps, charts, dredging contracts, and other related products through Multibeam and other hydrographic survey technology.
  • Perform appropriate wiring and connections associated with setting up a minimum of three survey systems with necessary components.
  • Develop maps from the processed survey data by using various software programs, including Hypack and ESRI Arc GIS programs.
  • Develop plots and quantities from edited field data.
  • Perform annual inventory and control of survey equipment on vessel, to include control of pilferable property.
  • Provide Aid to Navigation information and data directly to U.S. Coast Guard; meets with dredging contractors in order to coordinate Pre and Post dredging surveys in a manner that will least effect dredging operations.
  • Train lower grade employees in correct hydrographic survey methods and multibeam operations during slack/bad weather times.
  • Complete calibrations of survey equipment and survey vessels.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1.) Operating multiple hydrographic survey software systems to include; multi-beam, single beam, and side scan sonar, AND 2.) Collecting bathymetric data for chart creation, volume calculations or sediment modeling or performing minor repairs on hydrographic eauipment.This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).,Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. $73,598.00 - $95,676.00
