NOAA – The U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System Program Office, which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is the lead agency for, proposes rules to implement provisions of the Integrated Coastal and Ocean Observation System Act of 2009. The Act calls for the establishment of a National Integrated Coastal and Ocean Observation System to gather and disseminate data on key coastal, ocean, and Great Lakes variables. NRC – The Nuclear Regulator Commission (NRC) is issuing a draft report for public comment, titled Consequence Study of a Beyond-Design-Basis Earthquake Affecting the Spent Fuel Pool for a U.S. Mark I Boiling Water Reactor. The purpose of this study was to examine if faster removal of older, colder spent reactor fuel from pools to dry cask storage significantly reduces risks to public health and safety in the case of a severe earthquake. NIFA – The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) intends to initiate a new challenge area within the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative in Fiscal Year (FY) 2014 to address water issues. NIFA's approach will link social, economic, and behavioral sciences with traditional biophysical sciences and engineering to address watershed- or aquifer-scale problems.
