The U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) released the newest National Climate Assessment on May 6. The report, which includes input from 13 federal departments and agencies, “assesses the science of climate change and its impacts across the United States.” Scientists point out the potential consequences of climate change in the report, but also stress that adaptation and mitigation strategies can help reduce emissions and the severity of climate change impacts. The assessment examines the effect of climate change on extreme weather, sea level, agriculture, soils, and forests.
The message of the report echoes the previous National Climate Assessment from 2009, but uses recent data to further bolster its conclusions.
