maxwell (max'-well). The cgs (centimeter-gram-second) unit of magnetic flux. One maxwell = 10-8 weber , or the flux through one square centimeter normal to a field of magnetic induction of one gauss.

stoma (sto'-ma). A pore flanked by guard cells in the epidermis of a leaf, through which gases are exchanged. Pl: stomata. Adj: stomatal.
range [ecol] . The geographic area over which an organism or group of organisms is distributed. Syn: distribution [ecol].
kôzulite (ko'-zu-lite). A reddish-black to black monoclinic mineral of the amphibole group: NaNa2[Mn2+4(Fe3+,Al)]Si8O22(OH)2 .
fern . A vascular, nonflowering plant of the class Filicineae. Many modern ferns have complex fronds growing from an underground rhizome, and sporangia grouped on the surface of the leaf.
sophiite (so-phi'-ite). A colorless orthorhombic mineral: Zn2(Se4+O3)Cl2. Syn: sofiite.
set [stratig] . (a) A term introduced by McKee and Weir (1953, p.382-383) for "a group of essentially conformable strata or cross-strata, separated from other sedimentary units by surfaces of erosion, nondeposition, or abrupt change in character"; it is composed of two or more consecutive beds of the same lithology, and is the smallest and most basic group unit. Cf: coset. (b) A unit composed of two or more consecutive beds of the same lithology (Bokman, 1956, p.126).
plutonism [hist] (plu'-to-nism). The concept of the formation of the Earth by solidification of a molten mass underground. The theory was promulgated by Hutton in the eighteenth century (Dean, 1998).
mckelveyite-(Y) (mc-kel'-vey-ite). A green triclinic mineral of the donnayite group: NaBa3CaY(CO3)6•3H2O. Syn: mackelveyite.
felsophyric (fel-so-phyr'-ic). Volcanic igneous texture in which phenocrysts occur in a dense ground mass of intergrown quartz and feldspar. Obsolete.
