The Geological Society of America (GSA) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Congressional Science Fellow, Karen Paczkowski, published her final article for GSA Today and covered some of the work that she has done to broaden the science covered in the America COMPETES reauthorization happening in the House of Representatives and the Senate. It is an excellent overview of how geoscience Congressional Science Fellows apply their scientific background to modify legislation. In Paczkowski's experience working in Senator Edward Markey's Office (D-MA), she and others helped broaden the support for scientific research through official letters signed and drafted by geoscience organizations, many of which are AGI Member Organizations, and through the addition of an amendment was able to ensure support for informal STEM education institutions.
