ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to recognize Dr. Jean M. Bahr, Professor Emerita in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as the 2022 recipient of the AGI Medal in Memory of Ian Campbell for Superlative Service to the Geosciences, AGI's highest award.

Dr. Bahr, a Past President of AGI (2017-2018), is recognized for her unselfish service to the geosciences through proactive leadership of professional societies, inspirational mentorship of students and colleagues, valued advice on science for sound public policy, and respected research contributions on hydrology and living systems.

Having earned her bachelor's degree in Geology and Geophysics at Yale University and a Ph.D. in Applied Earth Sciences at Stanford University, she joined a hydrogeology firm and worked for two years providing technical assistance in Mali. Dr. Bahr's research contributions have focused on the interactions between physical and biogeochemical processes in groundwater, effects of heterogeneity in solute transport, paleohydrology, groundwater and ecosystems.

Dr. Bahr's leadership in producing policy statements on climate change and diversity helped propel the geoscience community forward in speaking out on some of the most important issues of our time. In addition, she has demonstrated dedication to helping and mentoring students, especially women and minorities, to succeed in the geosciences. A longtime leader in the geoscience community, Dr. Bahr has been a Fellow of both the Geological Society of America (GSA) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU), as well as received honors including the 2006 GSA Hydrogeology Division Distinguished Service Award, the 2012 Association for Women Geoscientists' Outstanding Educator Award, the 2017 AGU Ambassador Award, and the 2017 GSA Distinguished Service Award.

"This is a tremendous honor from an organization whose activities, resources, and publications have been valuable to me throughout my career," Bahr said on receiving the award. "I have also been inspired by many of the former recipients of the Ian Campbell Medal and am humbled to be included in their ranks."

The Campbell Medal is given in recognition of singular performance in and contributions to the profession of geology. Candidates are measured against the distinguished career of Ian Campbell, whose service to the profession touched virtually every facet of the geosciences. Dr. Bahr is being recognized at the Geological Society of America's Award Ceremony in Denver, Colorado, on October 9, 2022.
