Marjorie Chan Recognized for Contributions to Public Understanding of Geoscience

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to recognize Dr. Marjorie Chan, Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Utah, as the 2024 recipient of the AGI Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Public Understanding of the Geosciences.

American Geosciences Institute Announces 2017 Award Winners

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is pleased to recognize the recipients of its 2018 awards: Professor Iain S. Stewart with the AGI Award for Outstanding Contribution to Public Understanding of the Geosciences; Mr. Richard M. Powers with the William B. Heroy Jr. Award for Distinguished Service to AGI; and Mr. Russell G. Slayback with the AGI Medal in Memory of Ian Campbell for Superlative Service to the Geosciences, its highest award. All three awardees will be presented with their awards next week at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting in Seattle.

Dr. Scott Burns Recognized for his Contribution to the Public Understanding of Geoscience

Scott Burns, engineering geologist and geomorphologist and media personality was recognized by the American Geosciences Institute (AGI) with its Outstanding Contribution to the Understanding of Geoscience award. His award was presented at a ceremony at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting hosted in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. David R. Wunsch recognized by the American Geosciences Institute for Outstanding Contributions to the Understanding of Geoscience

This year the American Geosciences Institute is recognizing David R. Wunsch, Ph.D. with its Outstanding Contribution to the Understanding of Geoscience award. Through numerous outreach efforts, such as helping New Hampshire residents understand the collapse of the “Old Man on the Mountain,” educating the U.S. public on the importance of groundwater and helping support the authorizing of the SECURE Water Act his accomplishments have been numerous and valuable to the U.S. public interest.

Dr. Scott Tinker presented AGI award for Outstanding Contributions to the Understanding of Geoscience

Very few people have impacted the public understanding of geoscience as much as Dr. Scott Tinker. His documentary Switch, co-produced with Harry Lynch as part of the Switch Energy Project, has screened at over 350 universities, and reached an estimated 3 million people globally. In 2013, it will be distributed in thousands of Earth Science Week kits to students worldwide. For this, and many other esteemed accomplishments, Tinker has been presented the American Geosciences Institute award for Outstanding Contributions to the Understanding of Geoscience.
