Plowing and deicing the Siskyous (road)
The temperatures have dropped and the Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) explores how using salt to manage ice on walkways and roads during the winter may impact soils. As SSSA explains, chemical properties create an interesting dynamic between the negatively charged surfaces of the soils (remember those cation exchange sites?) and the positively charged sodium atoms released when road salt mixes with meltwater from ice and snow.
