Using a refined version of the popular game Minecraft, and incorporating important industry concepts, Team Atwood won the first Move Mining competition hosted by the Society for Mining and Metallurgy Exploration, Inc. The team, two brothers: eleven year old Corban, and eight year old Jayce and their father Garrett, a thirteen year veteran of the mining industry pitched their idea to increase young students’ understanding of the necessity and benefits of mining. Through this game students would be exposed to industry concepts like milling and refining, energy sourcing, realistic geology and environmental stewardship and the game features tools that could allow players to compete in simultaneous competition. A video of the competition and final can be found online at www.movemining.org.
