The article covers the history of sexual harassment in the sciences, and notes that fieldwork tends to exacerbate harassment problems.

AGI Awards Diversity Grants to Geoscientists Studying Deep Carbon

The Deep Carbon Observatory Diversity Grants program is made possible through support from Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and is designed to bolster participation of traditionally underrepresented geoscientists in the United States within the Deep Carbon Observatory community. The Deep Carbon Observatory is a global research program to transform our understanding of carbon in Earth. DCO is a community of scientists, from biologists to physicists, geoscientists to chemists, and others whose work crosses these disciplinary lines, forging a new, integrative field of deep carbon science.

AGI Announces Recipients of DCO Diversity Awards

As part of a 2-year initiative supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, AGI has awareded fourteen traditionally underrepresented geoscientists grants to advance their research and collaborate with the Deep Carbon Observatory. AGI would like to recognize and congratulate these individuals for their impressive proposals and research.

Increasing Diversity in the Deep Carbon Observatory

Sunday, November 1, 2015

U.S. geoscientists remain substantially less racially and ethnically representative than the general population, which means a large pool of talent is not entering the geosciences. A number of barriers have been identified, including scarce role models, lack of strong geoscience departments at minority serving institutions, and limited career awareness in the general population. The geoscience community has invested decades into addressing this problem, especially recruiting new underrepresented individuals into the discipline.
