Welcome to July! Here’s what’s new from the Critical Issues Program:
- There’s still time to register for our upcoming webinar, “Planning for Coastal Storm & Erosion Hazards”, which will take place on Thursday July 6th, 1:30pm EDT/10:30am PDT. This 90-minute webinar will focus on efforts to anticipate, mitigate, and respond to coastal storms, erosion, and associated hazards at the federal, state, and local level. Three case studies from around the U.S. will be featured as examples of how coastal hazard planning can evolve over time, with a focus on how geoscience informs planning at all stages. - We will also be hosting a webinar on Wednesday August 2nd at 3:00 pm EDT, entitled “Building the Modern World: Geoscience that Underlies our Economic Prosperity.” This webinar, based on a June 12th Congressional briefing, will focus on the fundamental geoscientific underpinnings of our nation’s infrastructure, from building materials and construction projects to hazard mitigation and coastal planning. - We’ve fleshed out our renewable energy content with three new subtopic pages on solar energy, wind energy, and hydropower. Each of these pages contains basic information, maps, reports, information for educators, relevant policy news, and more resources for your reading pleasure.
- Pyrite and pyrrhotite are minerals that have caused serious structural damage to buildings around the world, either when they’re present in aggregates used to make concrete or when they're disturbed during ground excavations prior to building. Our new FAQ explains how pyrite and pyrrhotite damage building foundations and how geoscientists help to prevent this damage.
- This month’s additions to our Maps & Visualizations portal include maps of groundwater and sea level rise impacts in Delaware, industrial mineral mines in Missouri, and solar energy suitability in Minnesota.
- Last but not least, we welcome our summer intern, Katja Luxem, who will be joining us on July 3rd and will be with us through September. Katja will be working on a range of new information products for our website and working with us on webinars and social media.
