drill-stem test

drill-stem test . A procedure for determining the potential productivity of an oil or gas reservoir by measuring reservoir pressures and flow capacities while the drill pipe is still in the hole, the well is still full of drilling mud, and usually the well is uncased. The tool consists of a packer to isolate the section to be tested and a chamber to collect a sample of fluid. It is similar to a temporary completion of the well. Abbrev: DST. Cf: wireline test.

burial metamorphism

burial metamorphism . A type of low-grade regional metamorphism affecting sediments and interlayered volcanic rocks in a geosyncline without any influence of orogenesis or magmatic intrusion. Original rock fabrics are largely preserved but mineralogical compositions are generally changed (Coombs, 1961). Cf: dynamothermal metamorphism.

AGU Commends the Bipartisan Budget Agreement of 2019

This week, the United States Congress passed the Bipartisan Budget Agreement of 2019, which was signed by President Trump. On behalf of the global AGU community of 60,000 Earth and space scientists, I’d like to thank the champions for science on Capitol Hill, as well as the leadership in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, for passing a budget that puts non-defense spending, which includes funding for science, on an equal footing with defense spending. In addition, AGU commends the Trump Administration for signing this budget agreement into law.

Science is essential to our society—it provides important observations, data, research, and innovations that help grow our economy, bolster public health and safety, and contribute to our national security. Their hard work and diligence in passing this critical budget agreement is a much-needed step in allowing stable funding for scientific agencies.

stomatal index

stomatal index . In paleobotany, the ratio of the number of epidermal cells to the number of stomata in a given area of a leaf, times 100. The index is used to compensate for the differences in stomatal density between sun and shade leaves, dry-climate and wet-climate leaves of the same species, and in the reconstruction of past levels of CO2. Cf: stomatal density.

Mind the Gap, Part II: Effective Stakeholders are Relationship Builders

By Monica E. Gowan, Ph.D., M.S. – Past Chair, GSA Geology & Public Policy Committee

In a previous Speaking of GeoscienceTM blog post (“Mind the Gap, Part I: There’s No Effective Engagement without Effective Stakeholders”), I discussed the importance of bridging from presenting facts to finding shared values to influencing attitudes in your science policy engagement. In this blog, I will take you a step further. Let’s say you have decided you want to make your own “ask” and maximize your stakeholder influence with Congress on an issue that is near and dear to your science or your heart. How do you prepare and craft your own approach and ask so you will be well-received and effective?

Primary Science Teaching Trust Endorsed Award for Carol Sampey

There is much evidence to suggest that children’s perception of science is formed before they leave primary school. To ensure that that primary students do not lose that latent interest and enthusiasm for the world around them, and the science that underpins this, they need innovative, creative and dedicated science teachers.  The Primary Science Teaching … Continue reading
