The application period for the Geoscience Division of the Council on Undergraduate Research (GeoCUR) Undergraduate Research Mentor Award is now open. The award was established by the division in order to highlight the importance of mentoring undergraduate research activities. The successful applicant will receive $500 and a year-long membership to the Council on Undergraduate Research.

Professor Susan Werner Kieffer Recognized as the 2017 Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist

Alexandria, VA - The American Geosciences Institute is pleased to recognize Dr. Susan Werner Kieffer, Professor Emerita at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with the 2017 Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist Medal. The Medal will be awarded to Dr. Kieffer at the American Association of Petroleum Geologists awards ceremony on April 2, 2017, in Houston.

AESE announcement - It’s time to submit the forms to nominate noteworthy publications and exceptional individuals in publishing for the annual Association of Earth Science Editors (AESE) awards. This year we have pushed the deadline forward a bit—to May 15, 2017—for submitting materials to be considered. This earlier deadline will give the committee enough time to read and judge the submitted publications before this year’s annual meeting in Yellowknife, NWT (September 6–9, 2017), where the winners will be announced at the Awards Banquet.

M.J. Tykoski to Receive the Edward C. Roy, Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching

Alexandria, VA - M.J. Tykoski, an eighth grade teacher at Cooper Junior High School in Wylie, Texas, has been named the 2017 recipient of the Edward C. Roy, Jr. Award for Excellence in K-8 Earth Science Teaching. Tykoski earned her Master's degree in Educational Leadership from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the Texas Earth Science Teachers Association, and is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. She was a finalist for last year’s award.

Nominate deserving colleagues for Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) Awards and Fellow in soil science research, education, industry, consulting, and extension. Initiate nominations by March 29 with reference letters and final submission by April 5. Students: Apply for SSSA scholarships, including Golden Opportunity Scholars, by April 5 with reference letters and final submission by April 12.
